By Toby Lane.   Nairobi, the country’s capital has seen tremendous growth over the years. The city is described as the ‘Green city in the sun’ or the ‘Silicon Savannah’. In addition it is an energetic, modern city that serves as a fascinating introduction to both wildlife and nightlife. Individuals are fixated on perceiving how things change, definite reason why the throwback Thursday hashtag (#TBT) is always trending. The hashtag encourages people from all over the world to share old pictures of themselves or events, consequently becoming one of the most widely used hashtags on social media.  Throwback Thursday posts can be from years prior or from only a couple of days back. There aren’t generally any limitations. Whatever the purpose, be it childhood pictures, an old song or screenshots of old Facebook status or tweets. The fun never ends week after week. Nairobi Fun facts

  • The name originates from the Maasai expression Enkare Nairobi, which means “cool water”, a reference to the Nairobi River which courses through the city. Furthermore the site of Nairobi was originally part of an uninhabited swamp.
  • Nairobi has been the set of a few American and British movies. For instance, the latest of these was ‘The Constant Gardener’ (2005), a large part of which was shot in the city. The story spins around a British ambassador in Nairobi whose spouse is killed in northern Kenya. A great part of the shooting was in Kibera.Among the most recent Kenyan entertainers in Hollywood who relate to Nairobi is Lupita Nyong’o.  She received an Oscar award for the best supporting entertainer in her role as Patsy in the film ’12 Years a Slave’. In addition she is the daughter to Kenyan lawmaker Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o
  • Following a campaign by Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai, Uhuru(freedom in Swahili) Park was saved. Plans to erect a 62-storey headquarters of the political party, Kenya African National Union were opposed. The park is used for outdoor speeches, services and rallies.
